speaking to an old elder friend recently about his decision to home school his high school aged kids.. he claims that here in australia, about 30% of the students that log into online classrooms are jw's.

the others are disabled kids - who cant physically attend class and the rest are long distance students.. another generation of under-educated jw kids on the way..

@diogenesister: the primary reason people homeschool is to get a better education. Again, it is all about parental motivation to the kids, where are the priorities. If the parents want their kids to go out in service and view school as suspicious, you won’t get good results, regardless of the type of school.

People from around the world go to the US for private education and healthcare, simply because it has the best outcome globally for people that are motivated. From lower to higher education, the US is filled with the rich class children of Asians, Africans and Europeans. I’ve worked in higher education for a while now and it is easier to find a foreigner than an American, even the people you think are white, speak perfect English (like myself) are often foreigners.

@Joey: computational neuroscience. Contributions to other fields are in parallel software development (large data management, image processing and language, ML/AI). Some famous studies you may have heard of are analyzing Google ngrams/project Gutenberg how words form chains that become sentences (a stepping stone for modern LLM), our evolutionary relation to color red (males being more attracted when a female wears red), video gamers being more reactive than their peers (found out by pure accident, student in the lab was developing a test and had his friends test it and got “impossible” results), NFL helmet brain damage studies and the fact that apes can do relatively complex math.

Hey, I’m a JW kid, but I was self-educated and self-motivated. I do have accolades and relatively well published nowadays, even have my name in documents related to one of the biggest US scientific project of the last and next decade, even made small contributions to the CERN LHC project. I agree that the majority if they remain JW may not, but I believe approx. 80% of JW kids nowadays stop attending, go to college etc.

JW abuse (in every way from eviction and abandonment to more serious physical and sexual abuse) in general is a problem that perpetuates through the generations, but kids can be successful despite lack of early education. My last year in school was interrupted by JW ‘schools’, I tried so hard in pursuit of a JW girl :) but I pulled it together somehow. I know others may not have been as lucky, but you can always do your best and you’re almost guaranteed to be successful. Nobel prize specifically has always been a political thing, but I know kids that were raised JW that have the potential.

Home schooling doesn’t necessarily mean they are undereducated. Plenty of people do it.

In the US, African American families often have a bias against education, there too you see despite full availability of public schools, people don’t graduate high school, are unable to read properly etc. So too JW are biased against education, despite having it available, their kids often don’t fully attend, putting their efforts into proselytizing.

Home schoolers on average do better than public schools, on par with private schools. It all depends on the parent and their priorities, kids mirror that. Home schooling in some regions of the world allow side stepping of oversight, the US is pretty strict on these things, requiring annual equivalency tests both at state and federal level, but Europe and I guess Australia, once you home school there are no further checks.

Hey. Great to hear I’m not the only one with messy deaths. I should have been in line as well, my grandmother has already donated it all before she even died.

What I have found however is that those things are not at all important in the long run. Sure it may have made life a bit more comfortable, but what makes me comfortable is knowing that it won’t make them happy.

As I stated somewhere else, recently found out an extended family member died. Only know because I was tracing them down for information on some true inheritance, my children. It made me feel happy that they died and soon others will die without ANY children, grandchildren or true friends present at their funeral, if they even know of their deaths. One of them found out 24h before the service out of some sense of duty and called in from work only to find the whole thing (JW funeral) very odd.

Your true inheritance is the happiness of your children. Not some number on a bank account you cannot take with you. Your children and grandchildren should remember you and have fond memories of you, a story told for at least a few generations - that is how you will be remembered. You never hear people talk about their rich great-grandmother, often the wealth is already squandered by then.

My children don’t know their great-grandmother at all, their grandfather or the person that raised me either. They know a bit about their grandmother. Not all of them are JW anymore but they made mistakes that are hard to forgive and forget, relationships broken. But they will know about their great uncle that inspired their dad and that ethos lives on, they will know about their great-great grandfather that engineered the railroads for my home country, even though he died by the time I was 8. They will know about their great-grandfather that was instrumental at developing Teflon at DuPont. I don’t have their inheritances, which were sizable enough, my grandmother squandered it at the JW, others through drinking and drugs (partially also because they were raised JW). But I do have their stories, their ethos, their legacy on which I am building some wealth, not for me, not for the JW but for my children and theirs.

Likewise they did the same for Catholics and collected just under 4800 cases with 1880 perpetrators. This is not specific to clergy, this is things the churches were aware of and did not report.

At first glance, these are the same numbers, so what is the big deal - there are 5M Catholics in Australia and strokes with the overall rate that there are about 40 child molesters per 100,000 in the general population, however there are ONLY about 70,000 JWs in Australia. That means unreported child abuse is 71 times more prevalent among JW than among Catholic, this amounts to 1.8% of JWs are child molesters.

And although I am highly biased, somehow that number doesn’t surprise me. This would mean in every congregation there are 1 or 2 known child molesters. I would say that is about accurate, every hall I ever went to had rumors about at least someone.

whatever happened to those who came back to jehovah?

due to slow growth and the constant scrutiny from governments like norway in relation to their harsh disfellowshipping practices,last year in a move that no one expected the watchtower for the first time extended an olive branch to all those who left the organization or were disfellowshipped in the past.considering this practice was introduced over 60 years ago and with a rough estimate that around 100,000 leave jehovah’s witnesses every year the total number is in the several millions.so we should have expected millions to have accepted this invitation and rejoined the organization, the result though was an abysmal few thousands according to a recent jw update.. so now, for the first time, the latest watchtower study magazine for april 2025 gives us an inside view on how this reintegration is coming along, and it doesn't look good!.

So those idiots that return, will they happily forget about all the damage they caused or was caused to them? They ruin lives, generations worth of innocents, lives lost, people damaged. At least they can give them a handshake, but no apology, no restitution.

basically the state ministry of churches is investigating the existence of the secret elder manual and its direction not to report immediately when child abuse happens, but instead detour through the WTBTS branch offices for instruction. This is against the law where the Danish say the elders or any adult has a duty to report, they instead tell victims and parents they have the right to report, but evidently heavily discourage that action (do not bring other Christians to Caesar so as not to bring reproach on the organization etc)

As we know, WTBTS does not claim ownership/copyright on any copies of the elder manual nor does it list it in its official list of publication in order to discredit anyone distributing it. That is why they are saying the copies that the Extra Magazine has access to are lies, Extra Magazine has a series of articles exposing the JW elders and financial fraud.

Rutherford and the Bible Students of his era published some horrible material not only about Jews but people who weren't white Americans.

Rutherford wrote to Hitler praising him and telling him he agreed with his view of the Jews. Hitler’s book and his desire for implementation of what became the Holocaust were relatively well known even though the American mainstream media refused to cover it until close to the end of the war. They had a convention in Berlin and opened with a song to the tune of the German national anthem.

You would think that “being inspired by God” you’d have a bit more foresight.

American Primeval and the Mormons

i always thought they were like the jws, or the quakers, but they were full on fascists committing massacres.. i'm sure they are hating having more people be aware of their past, but i gotta say, it is more event-filled than the jw history..

@vienne: Witnesses are a third schism sect descendent from Bible Students which themselves claim to be Russell’s Watch Tower who was initially an adherent of and heavily influenced by Miller, but after the Great Disappointment he came up with his own dates.

Miller was in direct competition with Joseph Smith. I read they both had many end of the world predictions and when one failed, the other would try to poach followers until the next prediction failed and then the poaching reversed.

Watch Tower International Bible Students Association (IBSA) is an extant organization claiming to be the continuation from Russell’s original vision, not part of WTBTS (Rutherford’s organization), many people seem confused as the WTBTS falsely makes claim to be IBSA.
